Greene Central falls to Farmville Central, 93-65
FARMVILLE-The Greene Central Rams, they would travel to face their rival, the Farmville Central Jaguars. The Rams had lost earlier in the season by double digits and hoped to flip the script. They couldn’t do so and lost by double digits again to the Jaguars led by senior point guard, “MJ” Williams.
“I liked the effort from my guys,” said Head Coach Blue Edwards. “We came in here and put a little fight.”
It looked like deja vu from their first matchup as Farmville Central used aggressive defense to get out to an early seven-point lead. This led to the Jaguars dominating most of the first, as the Rams could not figure out how to attack their defense. When the Rams did get good looks at the rim, they were just not going in. They would get a spark from Dontrez Evans scoring 5 quick points, with a three and inbound steal that led to an easy bucket. The Rams used this spark to close the gap and enter the 2nd down, 21-14.
“MJ Williams, not getting back and guarding a guy that shoots it well from range,” said Edwards.
Both teams started sloppy in the second quarter. Turnovers were a common theme for the Rams and Jaguars. Farmville capitalized more on the Rams turnovers, as they grew their lead to double digits. Then Williams started to put on a show for his team’s fans. He would hit two threes from the volleyball line one being an and one three. This stretch for the Jaguars expanded their lead to 20 points. Greene Central would try and get back into the game going into the 2nd half, but the Jaguars would have a response every time. Farmville Central had all the momentum going into the 2nd half up 51-33.
“We got a little impatient once Farmville gets us to play faster than we want to we kinda get out of sorts, said Edwards.
Farmville continued its dominance in the third, stretching its lead to thirty. It used the same formula as the first half: great defense and an amazing fast-break offense. The Rams continued to struggle against the Jaguars' offense, committing multiple turnovers. Junior guard Amarion Williams put an exclamation point on the Jaguars' lead with an electric dunk to end the third. This dunk would take Farmville Central into the fourth with a 74-43 lead over Greene Central.
The Jaguars used their bench unit for the entire fourth quarter. Greene Central fought hard the entire quarter against this unit from Farmville Central. The bench for Farmville was able to hold strong and maintain the huge lead that the started gave them through the first three quarters. The Rams would not be able to shorten the lead and lose their final game of the season, 93-65.
“It’s been a tough season,” said Edwards. “I thought I had a team that would win 17 or 18 basketball games this season.”
With the loss, the Rams ended their season on a three-game losing streak, with an overall record of 9-11 and a conference record of 5-7. The Jaguars continued their perfect record in the conference, improving to an 11-0 record and an overall record of 19-4. They hope to end their season on a high note with a win against the North Pitt Panthers.
